Fredrik Værslev's Tan Lines at Fondazione Giuliani, Rome

exhibition · 2026-05-04

Fredrik Værslev's itinerant solo exhibition 'Tan Lines' arrives at Fondazione Giuliani in Rome, following presentations in Switzerland and Germany. The show features two series: Sail Paintings and Garden Paintings. Sail Paintings are large canvases hung from the ceiling that sway with air currents, combining printed graphic design patterns with hand-stitched geometric fields. The artist intentionally leaves works half-finished, inviting friends to complete them with interventions like shoe prints, then exposes them to weather or parking garages. Garden Paintings are park benches coated with ten layers of boat varnish to preserve traces of use. The foundation, established in 2010 by notary Giovanni Giuliani and his wife Valeria, runs free educational workshops for children alongside exhibitions. Filomena Moisuc guided the visit, highlighting the stylistic oxymoron between modern graphic design and traditional craftsmanship. The exhibition is organized in collaboration with Kunst Halle Sankt Gallen and Bonner Kunstverein.
