Fred Sandback's Radical Sculpture of Intensity and Void

exhibition · 2026-04-23

Fred Sandback, who died on June 23, 2003 at age 59, created sculptures from taut yarn lines that challenge traditional notions of mass and volume. His work, developed from the late 1960s, uses minimal means—colored acrylic yarn stretched across spaces—to define volumes through absence rather than presence. Sandback rejected the sculptural tradition of carving or modeling, instead working with empty space. He spent hours physically pacing large spaces to internalize their dimensions before installing his lines. His practice is often linked to Minimalism, and Donald Judd was an early supporter, offering his New York studio for an exhibition. A traveling exhibition of Sandback's work, accompanied by a substantial catalog, began in winter 2005-2006 at Kunstmuseum Liechtenstein in Vaduz, then traveled to Fruitmarket Gallery in Edinburgh, Neue Galerie am Landesmuseum Joanneum in Graz, and capcMusée d'art contemporain in Bordeaux. The exhibition examines how Sandback's ethereal constructions achieve powerful physical presence through tension and attention, creating what he called 'pedestrian space' that requires viewer movement. His last installation was at Dia:Beacon shortly before his death.
