Fred Forest Retrospective at Paço das Artes, São Paulo

exhibition · 2026-04-23

Fred Forest, a pioneer of video art and co-founder of Sociological Art Collective (1974) and the International Movement of Communication Aesthetics (1983) with Mario Costa, is the subject of a retrospective at Paço das Artes in São Paulo, Brazil, from May 22 to July 16, 2006. Curated by Priscila Arantes, the exhibition presents seven of the originally planned nine modules, covering his work from 1967 to the present. Forest previously made headlines in São Paulo in November 1973 during the 12th Biennial, where he organized a parade of people carrying blank placards under the military junta, an action that earned him the Communication Prize and an arrest by the DOPS (political police department).
