Franz Cerami's Light Installation Illuminates Bagnoli Industrial Site

exhibition · 2026-04-26

Neapolitan artist Franz Cerami will transform the former steelworks of Bagnoli into a large-scale light art installation from September 12 to November 12, 2024. The project, titled Lighting Flowers, uses digital graffiti, videomapping, and luminous floral projections to animate the abandoned industrial area, which has been closed since 1992. The intervention is part of the UrbanNAture regeneration initiative promoted by Invitalia, aimed at converting the site into an urban park with industrial archaeology focus. Naples mayor Gaetano Manfredi, also the government's special commissioner for the operation, stated that Cerami's art has the power to create new beginnings for forgotten spaces. Cerami, born in 1963, has previously brought Lighting Flowers to peripheries of Naples, Rome, Berlin, London, Paris, São Paulo, and New York. Separately, he recently completed Face IT in Caivano, a project featuring 50 digital video portraits of local citizens projected on buildings and LED walls, aiming to create a shared community identity.
