Franz Cerami's Digital Installations Illuminate Calabrian Community
From December 27 to 30, 2022, artist Franz Cerami (Naples, 1963) presents 'Denzolu' in Corigliano-Rossano, a municipality in the province of Cosenza, Calabria. The project uses digital graffiti, videomapping, and digital painting to explore local identity and foster unity between the historically rival communities of Corigliano Calabro and Rossano, which merged into a single municipality in 2018. The title 'Denzolu' refers to the local dialect word for 'sheet,' alluding to a folk tale where Rossanesi spread sheets to block the sun from Corigliano. Cerami's installations aim to overcome boundaries and create a shared identity. The program includes three thematic moments: 'Limen Portraits' on December 28 at Torre del Cupo, featuring 100 photographic portraits of citizens processed with digital painting, oil, and graphite, printed on sheets hung from windows and assembled into a large projection; 'Lighting Flowers' on December 27 and 29, with nocturnal videomapping interventions in various locations; and 'Lumina' on December 30 at the Basilica del Patire, using digital art animated to music to enhance local cultural heritage. Cerami's work combines classical painting, digital painting, and videomapping, and he has previously developed similar projects in Naples, Rome, and other European capitals.
