Franz Borghese retrospective at Maschio Angioino in Naples
A posthumous solo exhibition of Franz Borghese (Rome, 1941–2005) titled 'Ci rivedremo a Filippi' is on view at the Maschio Angioino in Naples, with free admission. The show opens with a bronze sculpture surrounded by twenty ink drawings, eight temperas, and seven etchings, showcasing the artist's techniques. Borghese's work satirizes bourgeois life, professional castes, madness, war, and ostentation, drawing on expressionism reminiscent of George Grosz but with an Italian inflection. Notable etchings from the 1970s include 'Ingegnere mia figlia è una perla' (1975), 'Solo col sangue si lava l’onore' (1975), and 'Cosa dirò a Clotilde stasera?' (1975). The exhibition title references the phrase 'We will meet again at Philippi,' from Shakespeare's Julius Caesar and Plutarch's Parallel Lives, alluding to an inevitable reckoning. Curator Marina Guida explains the title reflects contemporary society. Borghese's works have been exhibited in New York, Madrid, Paris, Turin, Monaco, and Amsterdam. The Naples show is organized in three sections, featuring works from the 1970s and 1990s.
