František Kupka Retrospective at National Gallery Prague

exhibition · 2026-05-04

The National Gallery Prague presents a major exhibition of František Kupka (1871–1957) at the Waldstein Riding School, curated by Anna Pravdová. Kupka, a pioneer of Abstraction and Orphism, is celebrated for his rejection of traditional representation. His work is rooted in Viennese symbolism, enriched by Central European spiritual and philosophical heritage, and infused with interest in scientific discoveries, the universe, and natural laws. The show traces his artistic journey from youth to maturity, focusing on Symbolist paintings, early Expressionist portraits, abstract research, geometric forms, and a unique vocabulary of shapes and colors. Works on paper reveal his activity as a satirical draftsman and illustrator, as well as his engagement with philosophy, Greco-Roman art, religion, and science. Key pieces include Large Nude (1910) and Music (1936). The exhibition runs until January 20, 2019.
