Frans Hals Museum to stage first joint exhibition of Hals and Rembrandt in 2026
The Frans Hals Museum in Haarlem will host an unprecedented exhibition pairing works by Frans Hals and Rembrandt van Rijn from November 6, 2026, to February 28, 2027. Titled Hals–Rembrandt, this intimate presentation marks the first time these two Dutch masters have been featured together in a dedicated show. Nineteen paintings will be displayed in an environment designed to encourage close looking. Both artists are celebrated for their loose, expressive painting techniques and lifelike portrayals of diverse subjects, including wealthy patrons, children, actors, musicians, and merry drinkers. While sharing similarities in their approach to character studies and portraiture, differences between their artistic methods will also be evident. The exhibition highlights their status as two of the most significant artists of the 17th century.
