Frank Stella's Scarlatti Series Exhibition at Freedman Art in 2012

exhibition · 2026-04-22

From May 17 to September 27, 2012, Freedman Art in New York City presented ten works from Frank Stella's Scarlatti series at 25 East 73rd Street. The exhibition featured three-dimensional pieces constructed using CAD software and ABS material, with baroque music by composer Scarlatti playing in the gallery. Each artwork bore the Kirkpatrick number of a Scarlatti sonata. The show included k.161b (2011), a small green composition measuring 20 inches; k.37 (ABS Blue) (2012), a wall-mounted piece nearly nine feet tall; and k.359 (2012), a large gray sculpture projecting six feet into the space. Stella employed numerous assistants and advanced technology to create these works, which combined painting and sculpture elements. The critic viewed this series as representing a new synthesis in Stella's career, moving beyond his earlier Mannerist phase toward greater serenity and stability. Earlier in 2012, L & M Arts had exhibited Stella's pinstripe, aluminum, and bronze paintings. Stella's Protractor series was first shown at Leo Castelli in 1967.
