Frank Stella's Navajo weaving collection debuts at Peter Pap Rugs
An exhibition showcasing Navajo (Diné) weavings from Frank Stella's (1936-2024) collection will debut on May 15 at Peter Pap Rugs within Arader Galleries in New York City, continuing until June 10. This event represents the first public display of 40 weavings, which were acquired by Stella over a span of 40 years and date back to the 19th and early 20th centuries. Organized by New Hampshire textile dealer Peter Pap, the exhibition was developed in collaboration with Stella's widow, Harriet McGurk, for cataloguing and preservation. Pap considers the collection to be 'highly personal,' emphasizing visual appeal over academic significance. Additionally, the exhibition features geometric drawings from the 1960s, lent by the Frank Stella Estate, and all weavings are available for purchase.
