Frank Stella's Navajo Textile Collection Exhibited and Sold for First Time
From May 15 to June 10, 2025, Arader Galleries in New York will showcase Frank Stella's extensive personal collection of 55 Navajo textiles for the first time. Following this exhibition, the collection will move to Peter Pap Rugs in Dublin, New Hampshire, from June 20 to July 7. Each piece is available for purchase, with prices ranging from $6,500 to $25,000. Stella's interest in Navajo art began in the mid-to-late 1960s, influenced by Donald Judd and Tony Berlant, who co-curated the groundbreaking 1972 exhibit "The Navajo Blanket" at LACMA. The textiles, primarily from the late 19th and early 20th centuries, reflect the Transitional Era's experimentation with synthetic dyes and designs. Jill Alhberg-Yohe, a curator and expert, highlights that these textiles have often been neglected by scholars. Stella appreciated their visual similarities to his own artwork, characterized by vibrant colors and geometric patterns. This exhibition represents the first opportunity for the public to view his complete collection.
