Frank Stella Retrospective and Publications Mark 1988 French Focus

exhibition · 2026-04-23

A major Frank Stella retrospective, first presented at New York's MoMA in November 1987, will open at the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris from May 18 to August 28, 1988. The exhibition surveys works created between 1970 and 1987. Accompanying the show is a catalogue featuring a significant essay by William Rubin. Concurrently, three publications are being released in France. Hermann editions is publishing a French translation of Stella's Harvard University lecture series titled "Working Space." Flammarion is issuing a book on the artist with a text by Alfred Pacquement. This institutional attention follows earlier French presentations of Stella's work. In 1980, the Capc in Bordeaux exhibited pieces from 1970 to 1978, which also had a catalogue. Furthermore, the Galerie Daniel Templon held solo exhibitions of Stella's work in 1975 and 1981.
