Frank Lloyd Wright's 8 Buildings Nominated for UNESCO World Heritage Status
Eight iconic Frank Lloyd Wright buildings have been renominated for UNESCO World Heritage status after a 2016 deferral. The Frank Lloyd Wright Building Conservancy submitted a revised dossier titled 'The 20th-Century Architecture of Frank Lloyd Wright,' working with the U.S. National Park Service and ICOMOS. The nomination includes Unity Temple (Oak Park, Illinois, 1906-1909), Frederick C. Robie House (Chicago, 1908-1910), Taliesin (Spring Green, Wisconsin, 1911), Hollyhock House (Los Angeles, 1918-1921), Fallingwater (Mill Run, Pennsylvania, 1936-1939), Herbert and Katherine Jacobs House (Madison, Wisconsin, 1937), Taliesin West (Scottsdale, Arizona, 1938-1942), and Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum (New York, 1956-1959). The buildings are categorized into three criteria: satisfying functional and emotional needs through geometric abstraction and spatial manipulation (Unity Temple, Robie House, Taliesin West), design inspired by nature (Taliesin, Fallingwater), and architecture responding to an evolving American experience (Hollyhock House, Jacobs House, Guggenheim Museum). The proposal also addresses risk factors, maintenance plans, and potential future additions. Edith Payne (President) and Barbara Gordon (Executive Director) of the Frank Lloyd Wright Building Conservancy emphasized the collaborative revision process.
