Frank Lamy Curates 'Quotidien aidé (les locataires)' at École des Beaux-Arts, Tours

exhibition · 2026-04-23

Curator Frank Lamy organized the exhibition 'Quotidien aidé (les locataires)' at the École des Beaux-Arts in Tours, France, from March 10 to April 13, 2001. The show expanded on his previous London exhibition 'Usage' (2000) by featuring around twenty artists exploring the use of everyday life. Artists included Daniel Firman, whose installation presented the quotidian as an invasive, appendicular thing hindered rather than aided by objects. Others like Russell Chater projected scenographic views of computer interiors, Philippe Hurteau transferred encrypted erotic scenes from Canal+ onto canvas, Jean-Luc Bichaud extended the vegetal world with artificial elements, and Michel Guillet showed amputated or stuttering furniture. The body played a central role, with artists like Olivier Dollinger, Chantal Michel, and Brigitte Zieger staging fantasmatic closed worlds. Antony Freestone mapped signs to navigate reality, while Édouard Levé reconstructed photographed scenes from dreams. The exhibition presented a diverse and original image of contemporary art's personalized reinvestment of reality, where escaping the quotidian means reinventing the world.
