Frank Gehry to Design Museum for Model Trains and Architectural Replicas in Massachusetts

Frank Gehry has been commissioned by Thomas Krens to design the Extreme Model Railroad and Contemporary Architecture Museum, a new institution focused on model trains and architectural models. The museum will be situated near Mass MoCA in North Adams, Massachusetts, with an estimated cost of $65 million and a planned opening in 2020. Spanning 7,700 square metres, it will display works by 71 international architects, including Frank Lloyd Wright and Louis Sullivan. All architectural models will be on a uniform scale, featuring a replica of the Empire State Building standing approximately 10 metres tall. Krens, founder of Mass MoCA and former Guggenheim director, described the project as being created with 'historical obsession and mesmerizing detail.'
