Frank Gehry, Iconic Architect of Guggenheim Bilbao, Dies at 96
Frank Gehry, the renowned Canadian American architect known for his innovative postmodern creations, passed away on December 5 at the age of 96 from respiratory illnesses. His career began to gain attention in 1978 with the unconventional redesign of his Santa Monica residence, where he encased a Cape Cod bungalow in plywood and chain-link fencing. Over more than sixty years, Gehry established his firm in Los Angeles in 1962. His iconic project, the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao, completed in 1997, features flowing titanium exteriors that revitalized Bilbao's industrial waterfront into a cultural destination. Notable works include the Walt Disney Concert Hall (2003), Fondation Louis Vuitton (2014), and El Peix d'Or (1992). Born in Canada in 1929, Gehry relocated to Los Angeles in 1947, initially studying ceramics at the University of Southern California before earning his architecture degree in 1954. He also attended Harvard's Graduate School of Design and served in the US Army. Two significant projects in Asia are still underway: the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi, anticipated to open in 2026 as the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation's largest museum, and the CMU Museum of Fine Arts in Taichung, Taiwan, which has been under construction since May with a target opening in 2028. He is survived by his second wife, Berta Aguilera, and children Sam, Alejandro, and Brina; his daughter Leslie passed away in 2008.
