Frank Bowling's first solo exhibition in Asia opens in Hong Kong

exhibition · 2026-06-01

At 91, Frank Bowling continues to experiment with paint, pouring, spraying, and stitching vivid colors onto unprimed canvases. His works are now in over 70 museums worldwide. Last year, his art was featured at the 36th Bienal de São Paulo. Now, the London-based artist has his first solo exhibition in Asia: Hauser & Wirth's 'Frank Bowling: Like Water' opens June 11 in Hong Kong. Simultaneously, the Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge presents 'Frank Bowling: Seeking the Sublime,' a compact show of 11 works spanning his career, including two new paintings, 'Swan Upping' (2020) and 'Yellow Map' (2025). The exhibition traces his evolution from early expressionism through transitional works of the mid-1960s to poured paintings from 1976, created after his move to New York. Bowling's process involves starting on the floor, dripping paint from an overhead canvas, then directing assistants to pour paint and water. In his South London studio, he directs his son Ben from a wheelchair, seeking brighter colors. Bowling describes his studio as a laboratory, a family affair that keeps him youthful. 'Frank Bowling: Like Water' runs June 11 to August 29, 2026; 'Seeking the Sublime' continues until January 2027.
