François Rouan's 'Tressages' Film Premieres at Musée Fabre
A new film by François Rouan, titled 'Objet-Tressage,' premiered at the Musée Fabre as part of the exhibition 'François Rouan, Tressages 1966-2016.' The 59-minute film was created from hours of interviews filmed at Rouan's Laversine studio on February 28 and March 1, 2015, and in May 2016. It features conversations with artist and educator Mick Finch (Central Saint Martins, London) and art historian Philip Armstrong (Ohio State University, Columbus), both long-time followers of Rouan's process. The film explores the concept of 'tressage' (weaving) in its various forms, mirroring the exhibition's five thematic sections. Combining interview fragments with archival footage, studio photographs, film excerpts, and artwork reproductions—all reworked and animated—the film itself becomes a woven object akin to Rouan's paintings. It serves as both a retrospective and thematic guide to the exhibition while receiving unique insight from it. The film was realized with support from the Musée Fabre, in collaboration with Maud Goulas-Collot.
