François Pinault's Paris Foundation Museum to Open in 2019 with Tadao Ando Design

institutional · 2026-04-20

François Pinault, a luxury goods magnate, has announced plans for his Paris Foundation museum, scheduled to open in early 2019. The project, with a budget of €108 million (approximately £95 million), will transform the interior of the historic Bourse du Commerce building. Designed by architect Tadao Ando, who also created the foundation's Venice venues at Punta della Dogana and Palazzo Grassi, the museum will feature 3,000 square meters of exhibition space. Located between the Louvre and Pompidou Centre, the institution has secured a 50-year lease. According to Martin Béthenod, deputy director of Collection Pinault-Paris, the museum will focus exclusively on contemporary art. Unlike the Vuitton Foundation, it will not receive any state funding. The renovation will include a 300-seat auditorium and a black-box theater within the building's cylindrical structure.
