François Pinault Accelerates Paris Museum Opening in Response to Terrorism

architecture-design · 2026-05-05

Billionaire collector François Pinault is accelerating plans for his private museum in Paris, set to open within two years at the Bourse de Commerce. The decision follows recent terrorist attacks, including the Nice massacre, with Pinault stating, "Di fronte a questa barbarie, l'unica reazione possibile è andare avanti" (In the face of this barbarism, the only possible reaction is to move forward). The museum will house over 3,000 works from his vast collection, with a $55 million investment granting him a 50-year lease. Restoration is led by architect Tadao Ando, alongside heritage specialist Pierre-Antoine Gatier and young French firm NeM (Lucie Niney and Thibault Marca). Paris mayor Anne Hidalgo supported the project, which Pinault described as realizing a dream of an international network for free circulation of art. Pinault already operates two contemporary art spaces in Venice: Palazzo Grassi and Punta della Dogana.
