Francois Knoetze Receives 2023 SeMA-HANA Media Art Award at Seoul Mediacity Biennale

award · 2026-04-20

South African artist Francois Knoetze has been honored with the 2023 SeMA-HANA Media Art Award, presented during the Seoul Mediacity Biennale titled THIS TOO, IS A MAP. The award includes a prize of 30 million KRW and a trophy crafted by Korean ceramic artists Kim Deokho and Lee Inhwa. Knoetze's winning installation, Core Dump (2018-2019), features a four-channel video presentation alongside seven sculptural forms constructed from disassembled mechanical components. Footage and interviews from Kinshasa, Shenzhen, New York, and Dakar examine interconnected migratory, economic, and cybernetic systems. Jury chair Hee-young Kim, a Professor of Fine Art at Kookmin University, noted the work's exploration of technological infrastructures aligns with the Biennale's theme of non-territorial mapping. The exhibition remains open at the SeMA Seosomun Main Branch and five other venues until 19 November.
