Franco Vaccari, conceptual photography pioneer, dies at 89

artist · 2026-04-26

Franco Vaccari, a prominent Italian conceptual artist, has passed away. He was born in Modena, Italy, and initially gained recognition for his photography of graffiti, which he regarded as a form of artistic expression. In 1972, he participated in the Venice Biennale, unveiling his interactive project 'Real-time exposure #4,' which encouraged visitors to create self-portraits. Additionally, that same year, he documented his travel from Italy to Graz, leading to the work '700 km of exhibition Modena Graz.' Vaccari's writings, including 'Duchamp and the Concealment of Work,' reflect his deep influence by Marcel Duchamp. A major retrospective of his art is planned for 2026 at Museion in Bolzano.
