Franco Fontana retrospective at Brescia Photo Festival
The Museo di Santa Giulia in Brescia hosts a major retrospective of Franco Fontana, the Italian master of color photography, as the centerpiece of the VII Brescia Photo Festival. The exhibition, curated by Studio Fontana with support from Fondazione Brescia Musei and co-produced with Skira Arte, celebrates Fontana's 90th birthday (born December 9, 1933 in Modena). Over 120 images from 1961 to 2017 trace his career from analog to digital, organized in four sections: human, urban, and natural landscapes, plus his famous 'Asphalt' series. Fontana's work rejects documentary realism, instead using color to express his inner world. The installation includes a musical audio guide by Ivano Giordano. Fontana states: 'Color is life' and 'Photography is a way of living.' He embraced digital technology as a tool, saying 'the result is what counts, not the medium.' The exhibition runs as part of the festival themed 'Testimoni' (Witnesses), with Fontana considering himself a witness 'of the spirit and the invisible.'
