Franco Casu's SuperEroticHeroes at EXMA Cagliari
Franco Casu (born 1968, Cagliari) presents his latest project SuperEroticHeroes at EXMA in Cagliari, running until July 10, 2016. Curated by Emanuela Falqui, the exhibition explores the humanization of superheroes by revealing their introspective sides, thereby dismantling their mythic status. For a decade, Casu has worked on the erotic imagery of comic book characters. In this series, Batman becomes Butthole Man, Thor becomes Porn, Spiderman becomes Sperm Man, Superman becomes Suckerman, and Invisible Man becomes Invisiballs Man. These stripped-down idols are depicted in intimate moments, wearing only a loincloth embroidered with the artist's ideal of a superhero, narrowing the distance between man and myth. To emphasize voyeurism, Casu invites viewers to peek with a flashlight into glory holes—erotic containers housing his precious embroideries, symbolizing the transition from fantasy to humanity. A performance accompanied by Simon Balestrazzi features the artist as Grow Woman (Wonder Woman), a faceless heroine who types short phrases on an old typewriter and hands them to the audience, sharing memories and warnings about experiencing emotions in a new life condition.
