Franco Calarota, founder of Galleria d'Arte Maggiore, dies at 79

Franco Calarota, who founded and directed Galleria d'Arte Maggiore in Bologna, passed away at the age of 79 due to an unexpected illness. Born in 1943, he had a background in cultural heritage management and marketing before serving as an advisor at Christie's in London. In 1978, he launched Galleria d'Arte Maggiore, emphasizing modern and contemporary art, and curated exhibitions featuring renowned artists such as Giorgio de Chirico and Giorgio Morandi at prominent institutions. His gallery was active in leading art fairs and offered advisory services to numerous organizations. At the time of his passing, an exhibition was underway showcasing Morandi's pieces alongside Bertozzi & Casoni. His funeral is scheduled for Saturday, March 19 at 11:30 AM at S. Paolo Maggiore.
