Franck David's Celluloïd at Palais de Tokyo
Franck David's exhibition 'Celluloïd' at the Palais de Tokyo's 'Module' space, supported by the Caisse des dépôts et consignations, runs from March 8 to May 13, 2002. Curated by Nicolas Bourriaud and Jérôme Sans, it is one of the first works to effectively engage with the building's architecture. The installation comprises five works that remix David's own practice, playing with scale and movement between public and private spaces. It includes a wooden billboard, a metal and neon storefront, and a reception area inflated with survival blankets. The work references Robert Filliou's 'Portrait of the Artist: Well Done, Badly Done, Not Done', as well as Michel François and Thomas Hirschhorn. Objects are shrink-wrapped in recycled plastic bags, taking on a bone-like, mineral quality, while inflated walls recall Warhol's balloons. A central desk, reminiscent of Hirschhorn or Fabrice Hybert's fly farm, functions as a laboratory display. The exhibition is described as David's most lucid and ambitious, marking a 'great glass' moment in his career.
