Francis Alÿs named patron artist for Kathmandu Triennale 2017
Francis Alÿs has been appointed as the patron artist for the inaugural Kathmandu Triennale, scheduled from March 24 to April 9, 2017. The event is organized by the Siddharta Arts Foundation. The exhibition, titled 'My City, My Studio/ My City, My Life,' will feature 48 artists, with a strong representation from Nepal. The curator is Philippe Van Cauteren, artistic director of SMAK in Ghent. Alÿs contributed by tutoring the selection of projects, focusing on transforming 'almost nothing' into a valid artistic proposal. This follows his role as commissioner for the Iraqi pavilion at the 2017 Venice Biennale, titled 'Arcaico,' which will showcase works by eight modern and contemporary Iraqi artists alongside ancient artifacts. Curators for that project include Tamara Chalabi and Paolo Colombo, with the Ruya Foundation for Contemporary Art as promoter. Alÿs also conducted workshops in Iraqi refugee camps in 2016, involving Ai Weiwei, and participated in a Kurdish expedition to Mosul.
