Francesco Vezzoli Photographs Mahmood as Robert de Montesquiou for Numéro Art Cover

publication · 2026-04-27

Italian artist Francesco Vezzoli has created the cover for the sixth issue of French contemporary art magazine Numéro Art, featuring singer Mahmood. The cover photograph shows Mahmood emulating the pose of Robert de Montesquiou as painted by Giovanni Boldini in 1897. Vezzoli reinterprets Boldini's portrait by adding colorful, glittering tears streaming down Montesquiou's face, a recurring motif in Vezzoli's work. Mahmood, winner of the 2019 Sanremo Music Festival with the song "Soldi," is styled in fin-de-siècle attire with gloves and cane. The issue also includes two other covers: one featuring Cindy Sherman's Facetune-altered selfies and another with musician Blood Orange (Dev Hynes) photographed by Jacolby Satterwhite. Vezzoli previously designed a Vanity Fair cover in April 2020 inspired by Lucio Fontana.
