Francesco Vezzoli curates 'Palcoscenici Archeologici' in Brescia
Francesco Vezzoli (b. 1971, Brescia) returns to his hometown as curator of 'Palcoscenici Archeologici', a project winning the Italian Council grant. Promoted by Fondazione Brescia Musei, the exhibition runs until January 9, 2022, intertwining Vezzoli's works with ancient Roman ruins across Brixia Parco Archeologico di Brescia Romana, the Santuario Repubblicano, Capitolium, Teatro Romano, and the Santa Giulia museum complex. The project celebrates the return of the Vittoria Alata statue to its original location after restoration. Vezzoli, who has previously curated shows in Bolzano, London, and Milan, discusses his approach to curating as an artistic practice, comparing it to his exhibition on Alexander Iolas at Galleria Tommaso Calabro in Milan. He views cultural heritage as a global asset to be protected and exploited if necessary, and sees history as a tool to understand the present. Regarding the pandemic, Vezzoli states it had little impact on his art, predicting a frivolous post-pandemic summer.
