Francesco Clemente's Encampment at Carriageworks Sydney
Francesco Clemente's first Australian exhibition, 'Encampment', opens at Carriageworks in Sydney, running until October 9, 2016. The show features six large tents created in collaboration with Rajasthani artisans between 2012 and 2014, along with four sculptures titled Earth, Moon, Sun, and Hunger, and a series of 19 erotic paintings. The tents, inspired by nomadic Asian shepherd camps, have interiors hand-painted in tempera by Clemente and exteriors embroidered with gold thread by Indian craftsmen. The exhibition is the second edition of the Schwartz Carriageworks series, an annual program of major international visual arts projects. Carriageworks is a multidisciplinary arts center supported by the NSW Government and the Australia Council for the Arts. Clemente, a key figure of the Transavanguardia movement, has been based in New York since 1981 and previously collaborated with Andy Warhol and Jean-Michel Basquiat.
