Francesco Casetti's 'Hypertopia' Lecture on Cinema and Place Now Online

digital · 2026-04-22

On May 3, 2013, Francesco Casetti delivered a lecture titled 'Hypertopia' at Central Saint Martins in London, introduced by Mark Lewis. Casetti, Professor of Film Studies at Yale University, examined how cinema experience is inherently tied to place, and discussed the contemporary re-emergence of moving images in architectural and topographical contexts, as well as shifting viewing conditions in cinemas and beyond. The lecture was the inaugural event of 'The City and its Moving Images,' a research project and talk series exploring the moving image's impact on modern urban cultural life, co-organized by Afterall and the Birkbeck Institute for the Moving Image. Casetti's work focuses on the reconfiguration of cinema in a post-medium era, comparing it to cinema's rise in the early 20th century. Mark Lewis, an artist and co-editorial director of Afterall, is also a Professor of Fine Art at Central Saint Martins. The video of the lecture is now available online.
