Franceschini: Same Rules for Stadiums and Live Shows

Italian Culture Minister Dario Franceschini has demanded equal treatment for cultural events if stadiums are allowed to reopen with public attendance. Amid discussions on reopening productive activities, the government plans to allow 25% capacity at football stadiums for the European Championships from May 11 to June 11. Franceschini, in an April 12 hearing with the Technical Scientific Committee (CTS) and in proposals sent on April 13, argued that if sports events with audiences are authorized, concerts and shows in stadiums or similar open-air venues should follow the same rules. He emphasized that outdoor transmission risk is low and that the cultural sector is as essential as education. Theatres, cinemas, and museums remain closed, while open-air stadiums are prioritized. Franceschini also proposed allowing regions to experiment with larger audiences in outdoor venues with additional safety measures, as seen in other European countries. The sustainability of reduced-capacity performances remains a concern.
