Francesca Lorenzi Brings JR's Inside Out Project to Tuscany with Giant Portraits of Nursing Home Residents

exhibition · 2026-04-26

In the medieval village of Castagneto Carducci, Tuscany, photographer Francesca Lorenzi has installed 35 giant portraits of nursing home residents on the walls of houses, alleys, and squares as part of JR's global participatory art project Inside Out. The exhibition, titled "IO UNO DI NOI," runs until August 31, 2024. Lorenzi, who is from Riva del Garda, aims to highlight social aspects of life by bringing the stories and gazes of RSA (Residenza Sanitaria Assistenziale) guests into public space. Castagneto Carducci, named after poet Giosuè Carducci who spent his childhood nearby in Bolgheri, offers panoramic views of the Maremma and is close to the sea. Inside Out, initiated by French artist JR, is the world's largest participatory art project, allowing anyone to submit a format on its website to create an artistic action. Lorenzi's project is part of this global initiative, using the streets as the world's largest gallery.
