France as Guest Country at Porto Design Biennale Explores Design as Social Development

festival-fair · 2026-04-27

The Porto Design Biennale, which runs until July 25, 2021, has France as its guest nation. Curators Caroline Naphegyi and Sam Baron have developed the "Autre" program, which encompasses radio conferences, exhibitions, installations, and social initiatives. They crafted an interactive experience across four locations in Porto, encouraging attendees to engage with alternative realities. During the lockdown, they distributed everyday items to around sixty designers and thinkers for innovative interpretations. The program is structured around four themes: "Autre-là," "Autre-monde," "Autre-voix," and "Autrement." Alastair Fuad Luke, the biennale's curator, focuses on the design needs of women, while Baron challenges gender classifications. Naphegyi points to the progress of French design, citing Lille Métropole 2020 World Design Capital. Featured artists include Berger&Berger and Didier Faustino.
