France and UK Announce Multinational Defensive Force for Strait of Hormuz

On Friday, France and Britain announced a new initiative to lead a multinational effort focused on ensuring safe navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, contingent upon ongoing regional stability. This plan was unveiled during talks in Paris involving British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and French President Emmanuel Macron. The virtual meeting included representatives from 49 countries in Europe and Asia, though notably, neither the U.S. nor Iran participated. After Iran imposed a blockade in response to U.S. and Israeli military actions on February 28, global concerns about inflation, fuel shortages, and food supply issues arose. Markets reacted positively when Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi stated that the Strait would be open to commercial traffic if a ceasefire was achieved. Additionally, former U.S. President Donald Trump mentioned having received a NATO proposal for securing the waterway but recommended the alliance to "STAY AWAY."
