France and Spain battle wildfires ahead of new heatwave

Firefighters in both France and Spain are urgently working to control extensive wildfires ahead of an impending heatwave later this week. Approximately 220,000 individuals, including tourists, have been evacuated in France, especially in the Bordeaux region. Meanwhile, in Spain, around 100,000 residents have been instructed to leave their homes or find shelter. French Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu characterized the current fire season as "unprecedented," with the area burned already exceeding the record set in 2022. He pointed out that human negligence causes nine out of ten fires. Additionally, in Castellon province, Spain, fire chief Chevi Bolumar highlighted the danger posed by old ordnance from the Spanish Civil War that detonates when exposed to flames.
