Fragments of Folklore exhibition reinterprets heritage through contemporary art in Riyadh

exhibition · 2026-04-22

Fragments of Folklore at Riyadh's Jax District presents four artists reimagining cultural heritage through modern techniques. Lulwah Al Homoud transforms Arabic calligraphy into geometric patterns, while Rashid Al Khalifa's abstract 3D pieces reference Bahrain's modernist architecture. Raeda Ashour employs hand-embossing to preserve architectural motifs, and Hamra Abbas creates stone murals using traditional inlay techniques. Curated by Thaa, Mir'a Art, and Triyad, the exhibition features an immersive scenography by Mohamed El Sharkawy inspired by Najdi villages. Al Khalifa's first painting from 1966, preserved at his childhood home now housing RAK Art Foundation, opens the show. The exhibition runs until 12 May, exploring folklore as a dynamic, evolving narrative rather than static tradition.
