Foxy Production Gallery Closes After Two Decades

institutional · 2026-04-24

Foxy Production, a New York gallery founded in 2003 by Michael Gillespie and John Thomson, is closing. The gallery launched in Brooklyn before moving to Chelsea and later the Lower East Side. It was known for championing moving-image, photography, and digital works, and helped launch the careers of artists such as Sterling Ruby (now with Gagosian) and Sara Cwynar. It also showed tech-focused artists like Petra Cortright and Travess Smalley. No official reason was given, but Artforum reports that the gallery's landlord sued in July 2023, alleging $200,000 in unpaid rent since February 2022. The gallery's attorney disputes the claim. The final exhibition is photographer Erin Calla Watson's (Untitled) n.d., closing October 8. This follows the closure of another Lower East Side gallery, JTT, last month.
