Four Summer Exhibitions in Languedoc-Roussillon: Bioulès, Morris, Meurice, Kawamata
In summer 2006, four exhibitions across Languedoc-Roussillon showcased Vincent Bioulès, Robert Morris, Jean-Michel Meurice, and Tadashi Kawamata. At the Musée d'art moderne de Céret, Bioulès's retrospective "Un voyage à Céret" (June 17–October 1) featured landscapes from 1966 to 2006, curated by Joséphine Matamoros to highlight continuity between abstraction and figuration. Critic Catherine Millet praised Bioulès's recent large-format works (150–200 x 200–300 cm) for their open space and fragmented touch, singling out "Noé II" from the Musée de Saint-Étienne. At the L.A.C. in Sigean (June 25–September 24), Morris showed recent encaustic paintings evoking Hopper and De Chirico, and ink-on-paper works inspired by Goya's "Disasters of War," executed blindfolded. Millet found Bioulès more audacious than Morris. In Narbonne (June 16–August 31), Meurice's mini-retrospective at the Palais des Archevêques included four "Pénélope" works (1973, 600 x 240 cm) from the Musée National d'Art Moderne, plus recent "Eclipses" and photographic notes. At Château de Fraïssé-des-Corbières (July 7–September 16), Kawamata built a wooden ramp and platform against the castle façade, creating a vertiginous installation of barrels and palettes, described as one of his least "unhinged" works, harmonizing with the wild Corbières landscape.
