Four major Italian art restorations in January 2023
Artribune launches a monthly restoration column covering four significant projects. Pietro Perugino's "Compianto sul corpo di Cristo" (1472), known as the Gonfalone del Farneto, is being restored for a major exhibition opening March 4, 2023, at the Galleria Nazionale dell'Umbria in Perugia, celebrating the 500th anniversary of the painter's death. The restoration is funded by Coop Centro Italia and Fondazione NOI Legacoop Toscana. Andrea Camassei's "La Caccia di Diana" (1630-1638), commissioned by Taddeo Barberini, is undergoing restoration at Palazzo Barberini in Rome, sponsored by Teleperformance Italia and Associazione Civita, ahead of an exhibition marking the 400th anniversary of Pope Urban VIII's pontificate. Filippo Balbi's "Testa anatomica" (1854), a painted anatomical table exhibited at the 1855 Exposition Universelle in Paris, has been restored by Natalia Gurgone of Cooperativa Koinè, promoted by Associazione Gottifredo di Alatri and supported by Fondazione Terzo Pilastro-internazionale. It will be shown from August 5 to October 29, 2023, at the Certosa di Trisulti near Collepardo. The Cavallerizza Reale of Palazzo dei Normanni in Palermo has received €720,000 for restoration and archaeological excavations, part of a project to transform the former riding school into a conference hall, with work including removal of prefabricated structures, repaving, and installation of new systems.
