Four Le Corbusier Buildings to See in Paris
A century after Charles-Édouard Jeanneret-Gris adopted the pseudonym Le Corbusier, his architecture remains influential. This article guides readers through four Parisian projects by the master. The first stop is Maison La Roche–Jeanneret (1923–1925) in the 16th arrondissement, a house-gallery commissioned by Swiss banker Raoul La Roche. It features an L-shaped plan, a convex gallery volume on slender pillars, a triple-height atrium, and a double-height gallery with ribbon windows. The second is Le Corbusier's own home and studio at Immeuble Molitor (1931–1934) at 24 Rue Nungesser et Coli, designed with Pierre Jeanneret. The duplex occupies the top two floors, with a Mediterranean-style atelier under a white barrel vault, a small study hidden behind a bookshelf, and a terrace with city views. The third is the Pavillon Suisse (1930–1933) at the Cité Internationale Universitaire in the 14th arrondissement, a Swiss student residence with a rigid dormitory block on massive concrete supports, curving common areas, and vibrant colors including a mural by Le Corbusier. The fourth is Maison du Brésil (1953–1959), also on the university campus, modified from a design by Lucio Costa. It has a closed north facade and an open south facade with loggias reminiscent of the Unité d'Habitation, a low-ceilinged ground floor with stained glass, and a small auditorium. The article concludes that Le Corbusier's works, like classic films, always reveal new nuances.
