Four Italian and German brands pioneer sustainable footwear with recycled materials and blockchain traceability

Four footwear brands—RE49, nat-2™, ID.EIGHT, and WAO—are leading sustainable innovation in Italy and Germany. RE49, founded by Nicola Masolini and Alberto Ciani in Gonars, Italy, traces its roots to 1949 when Masolini's great-grandfather recycled military uniforms into shoes. Today, RE49 uses recycled materials (sails, jeans, umbrellas, tires) and blockchain microchips for traceability, with 100% carbon-neutral production. nat-2™, founded in Munich in 2007 by Sebastian Thies, a sixth-generation shoemaker from a family that has produced footwear since 1856, creates luxury unisex sneakers from materials like certified wood, stone, hay, coffee grounds, and pineapple. Production is mostly in Italian artisan workshops. ID.EIGHT, founded in 2019 by South Korean designer Dong Seon Lee and Italian product manager Giuliana Borzillo, produces cruelty-free, unisex sneakers Made in Italy in a historic family-run factory in the Marche region, using apple peels, grape skins, and pineapple leaves from food industry waste. WAO, led by CEO Luigi Pucci and Project Manager Michele Stignani, makes 97% recyclable sneakers from biodegradable latex, Go!Zero rubber, regenerated nylon Econyl, and organic cotton. WAO offers free take-back and disposal, composting biodegradable parts and recycling others. All brands emphasize circular fashion, animal-free materials, and sustainability.
