Four contemporary artists among 2023 MacArthur 'genius grant' recipients
Four contemporary artists have been named 2023 MacArthur Fellows, receiving the prestigious $800,000 no-strings-attached award. María Magdalena Campos-Pons, based in Nashville, currently has work displayed at the Center for Feminist Art at the Brooklyn Museum. Raven Chacon, a composer and artist who redefines landscape through music and performance, became the first Native American to win the Pulitzer Prize for music last year. Philadelphia-based Carolyn Lazard works across installation, sculpture, and drawing to explore accessibility and crip time. Dyani White Hawk's practice investigates Indigenous aesthetics' influence on modern art history. Both White Hawk and Chacon are featured in the exhibition 'Indian Theater: Native Performance, Art, and Self-Determination since 1969' at the Hessel Museum of Art at Bard College, on view through November 26, 2023. The John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation annually awards these fellowships to individuals demonstrating extraordinary originality across any field. This year's 20 fellows also include poet Ada Limón, scholar Imani Perry, and cultural preservationist Patrick Makuakāne. Past visual artist recipients include Mark Bradford, Nicole Eisenman, Trevor Paglen, and Julie Mehretu.
