Four charged for toppling of Edward Colston statue in Bristol

Four individuals—Rhian Graham, Milo Ponsford, Jake Skuse, and Sage Willoughby—face criminal damage charges for pulling down a statue of slave trader Edward Colston in Bristol on 7 June. The incident occurred during a Black Lives Matter protest, with the monument thrown into the city harbour. Bristol city council estimates the damage at approximately £3,750. Following retrieval, the statue is being restored with graffiti and an old bike tire preserved from the water; it will be exhibited alongside BLM placards in a museum. Avon and Somerset police investigated the case, with a first hearing scheduled at Bristol magistrates court on 25 January. The Crown Prosecution Service emphasized that proceedings are active and warned against prejudicial reporting. Public pressure to remove colonial memorials intensified after the toppling, notably affecting a statue of Cecil Rhodes at Oxford University's Oriel College. On 17 June, the college voted to take down Rhodes's statue, though Rhodes Must Fall campaigners expressed caution. A commission examining the statue's future must report by January 2021. A petition for Colston's removal had garnered thousands of signatures prior to the protest.
