Foundation NFT Marketplace Closes After Blackdove Acquisition Deal Collapses

digital · 2026-04-19

The NFT marketplace Foundation is shutting down after a rescue acquisition by digital art platform Blackdove fell through. On April 16, Foundation announced the closure following the collapse of the deal, which was signed earlier this year but abandoned after Blackdove's due diligence concluded building its own marketplace was more strategic. Foundation co-founder Kayvon confirmed the failed agreement. The platform's revenue plummeted from approximately $20.5 million in 2021 to just $4,500 in Q1 2026, a decline of over 99%. Monthly trading volume dropped from $15–20 million during peak periods to between $30,000 and $100,000. Data from Token Terminal shows overall NFT market trading volume has fallen by more than 90% since the 2021-2022 peak. Foundation operated as a curated marketplace for artists but relied entirely on transaction fees, a model undermined by prolonged declining liquidity and shrinking revenues. User assets remain secure due to the platform's non-custodial model, with NFTs stored on the blockchain. Foundation will temporarily restart infrastructure to allow artists to delist active NFT listings, a process taking 15–20 minutes. Metadata and media data for NFTs will be maintained for at least one year. The closure reflects structural issues in the NFT market, where activity concentrates on dominant platforms like OpenSea and Blur, making smaller marketplaces unsustainable. The failure marks another high-profile collapse as the NFT market struggles post-boom.
