institutional · 2026-04-26

The Fotomuseum Rotterdam, part of the Netherlands' 30 National Museums, has been inaugurated in a refurbished commercial warehouse dating back to 1902. The original design was by J.P. Stok Wzn and J.J. Kanters, while the renovation was carried out by RENNER HAINKE WIRTH ZIRN ARCHITEKTEN and WDJARCHITECTEN, who maintained six floors and introduced a central atrium. Established in 2003 with an €11.2 million legacy from Hein Wertheimer, the museum boasts over 6.5 million photographic images, with expectations to reach 7.5 million by 2028. Notable exhibits feature works by Cor Jaring and Anna Frank. Zippora Elders will take on the role of director starting April 13. The inaugural exhibitions include "Awakening in Blue" (running until June 7, 2026) and "Rotterdam in focus" (open until May 24, 2026).
