institutional · 2026-05-04

Fotografiska, the renowned photography museum located in Stockholm, has revealed its intention to expand with new sites in New York and London. Established in 2010 by Jan and Per Broman, the museum occupies a historic Art Nouveau structure that previously served as a customs house, showcasing a classic red brick exterior and a contemporary interior designed for temporary displays. In addition to art, Fotografiska features shops and a Michelin-starred restaurant on its second floor. Since its inception, the museum has presented 150 exhibitions, showcasing works from iconic artists like Annie Leibovitz and David LaChapelle, and has welcomed over 500,000 visitors. The New York site is expected to debut in spring 2019 on Park Avenue, while the London branch will open in Whitechapel in autumn 2019. Meanwhile, the Smithsonian Institution and the Victoria and Albert Museum have established a partnership for a permanent exhibition and temporary shows at a new gallery in London's Olympic Park, set to open in 2023. Additionally, the New Museum of New York has teamed up with Vinyl Factory for "Strange Days: Memories of the Future," curated by Massimiliano Gioni, which will launch on October 2 during the Frieze Art Fair.
