Fotografiska Expands to Berlin, Miami, Shanghai, Becoming World's Largest Photography Museum

institutional · 2026-04-27

Fotografiska, the Swedish photography museum with existing locations in Stockholm, New York, and Tallinn, is set to open three new venues in Berlin, Miami, and Shanghai between 2022 and 2023. This expansion will make it the world's largest private photography institution by total exhibition space and number of shows. The Miami venue, designed by AD100 Rockwell Group, will occupy a former 1946 industrial building in Allapattah near the Rubell Museum, with all galleries on the ground floor to create "osmotic" environments for personalized visitor journeys. Its opening is scheduled for the second half of 2023. The Berlin location, the largest at 5,400 square meters, is designed by Herzog & de Meuron and Studio Aisslinger inside the historic Kunsthaus Tacheles, a 1908 former department store in the Jewish quarter. Marina Paulenka was appointed director in April 2022. The Shanghai venue, designed by Neri&Hu, will renovate an industrial warehouse in the rapidly growing Suzhou Creek district. Fotografiska was founded in Stockholm in 2010. In early 2021, it partnered with Neuehouse to form CultureWorks, driving this expansion. CEO Josh Wyatt stated the museum collaborates with innovative architecture firms to balance historical preservation with new exhibition needs. The Stockholm location attracted approximately 450,000 visitors, exceeding pre-pandemic numbers.
