Fotografia Europea 2017: 8 Must-See Exhibitions in Reggio Emilia
On May 5, 2017, the 12th edition of Fotografia Europea opens in Reggio Emilia, organized by Fondazione Palazzo Magnani and the municipality. Artribune selects eight unmissable shows. At Palazzo Magnani, 'Paul Strand e Cesare Zavattini. Un Paese. La storia e l’eredità' revisits the seminal 1955 photobook documenting Luzzara's peasant life. At Chiostri di San Pietro, 'Dall’archivio al mondo. L’atelier di Gianni Berengo Gardin' explores the photographer's creative process through cameras, contact sheets, and archival materials. Also there, 'A Short History of South African Photography' traces 100 years of apartheid history via 100 images from archives, museums, and photographers, reflecting the guest country. 'Up to Now. Fabrica Photography' showcases over 100 works by alumni of Benetton Group's talent incubator founded in 1994. 'Les Nouveaux Encyclopédistes', curated by Joan Fontcuberta, rethinks classification and knowledge in the age of selfies and consumerism. At Chiostri di San Domenico, '2017: altri paesi' features Tommaso Bonaventura, Aleix Plademunt, and Moira Ricci, each selecting a 'country' as metaphor. At Spazio Gerra, 'Community Era. Echoes From The Summer Of Love' marks the 50th anniversary with works by Robert Altman, Elaine Mayes, Bruno Vagnini, and Baron Wolman documenting the 1960s counterculture. At Museo della Storia della Psichiatria, Christian Fogarolli's 'Satelliti' engages with the archive of the former San Lazzaro psychiatric hospital.
