Fotografia Calabria Festival Expands to Second Edition with New Name and Venues
The Fotografia Calabria Festival, formerly Fiumefreddo Photo Festival, returns for its second edition from July 21 to August 20, 2023, in the Calabrian towns of Fiumefreddo Bruzio and San Lucido. Founded and directed by Anna Francesca Catalano, the festival expands its scope under the theme "Cambiamento" (Change), reflecting a shift from experimental to structured programming. Ten exhibitions are staged across the two locations, featuring photographers such as Gabo Caruso (Argentina), Klaus Pichler (Austria), and the collective Vaste Programme (Giulia Vigna and Leonardo Magrelli). Notable projects include "Coras's Caurage" on human rights, "Petunia Carnage" on science, and a Climate Visuals collective on climate change. Archivio Luce – Cinecittà presents its first exhibition in Calabria, "Anni Interessanti," curated by Enrico Menduni, covering 1960–1975. A workshop with London-based photographer Laura Pannack engaged locals, with backstage photos screened at the opening at Castello della Valle. The festival also announced winners of a competition: first prize to Filippo Ferraro for "Wooden Diamonds – Identity Resilience in the Italian olive tree epidemic" about the Salento olive tree epidemic; second to Toma Gerzha for "Ctrl+R" on the digital-native generation; third to Juliana Gómez Quijano for "The Two Strands" on identical twins; and an honorable mention to Filippo Venturi for "Broken Mirror," combining Korean Peninsula exploration with AI.
